Dec 13, 2012 Update: Apparently, NearMap has closed its doors to the little people, so I've replaced the links below with Google Maps links to at least give an idea of where the changes are occurring.
In Parts 1 & 2, I took a look at the commercial, government and public space developments undergoing visible change on NearMap. In this 3rd and final installment, I finish with a (long) list of some of Dandenong's recent residential developments that are in progress or have been recently completed.
And here they are:
- Metro Village - It seemed only appropriate to begin with Metro Village. This link shows the last few sets of town houses being built. After these come the apartments fronting Cheltenham Road, starting with Mosaic.
- City Rise - OK, so there's no change here (and none apparent as at 30th October). I'm very disappointed that the developer would give such a strong indication of the starting date and then not follow through.
- Meridian - Meridian has about 360 lots and seems well past half way complete based on this shot.
- Somerfield estate - Not part of Dandenong proper and nowhere near Dandenong, apparently, if you read the advertising literature (infuriating and offensive!) but in the real world, it's very close and will have a big impact on Dandenong into the future which is why I include it here. My only objection is that the residential zone wasn't extended all the way to Eastlink. (As if we have a shortage of industrial land in Dandenong!) A major mistake in my opinion which will reinforce the divide between the new Keysborough estates and Dandenong.
- 12 New Street - 3 storey apartments. I really like the (one) render of this that I've seen. Hoping it turns out well.
- 38 King Street - 4 storey apartments. Made the local news as a pictorial example of presumably inappropriate development (see second picture here). In reality, it's not inappropriate at all given its location (a very short walk from the market) — but the side detailing (shown prominently in the story's picture) is very disappointing.
- 9 McFarlane Crescent - 3 storey apartments. Hope it makes a great addition because, despite its very brief length and ramshackle appearance, I have a soft spot for the street that plays host to this development.
- 20 James Street - 3 storey apartments, recently completed. I think this one turned out excellent — makes a good impression when you walk or drive towards it along Herbert Street (which is not as easy any more given the school-day road closures).
- 3 Close Avenue - 4 storey apartments by the City Rise developers. I think it looks quite good.
- 34 Ann Street - 3 storey apartments. Unremarkable so far and a far cry from the advertised render. I get particularly annoyed when developments don't match the renders.
- 23 Edith Street - I believe this will be 3 storey apartments. I've never seen this advertised anywhere, ever — but there are bulldozers on a site that was previously vacant, so maybe something is going ahead.
- 69 Clow Street - 4 storey apartments. I haven't seen this advertised for a while, so I can't tell if they are preparing to build or suspending due to lack of interest.
- 57-59 Stud Road - 4 storey apartments. (Gateway Apartments.) No changes in the map, but the house here has since been demolished. The render of this one is quite busy, but I like it.
- Webster Street townhouses - Included because this is very much an underdevelopment of this prime corner site. Incidentally, this part of Hammond Road (the bridge over the creek and the intersection with Webster Street) has to be one of the ugliest sections of road in Dandenong, which is baffling given how easily it could be made attractive. Also of note: as far as I can tell, there are no 3+ storey developments as yet in south Dandenong (aside from the one or two in Metro Village).
- Residential development, Princes Hwy/Eastlink - Demolition well progressed. The area's zoning will be Residential 2 near the highway, and Residential 1 behind. It's quite large, about 1.7ha, which is 10% of the size of Metro Village.
- Old Mobil petrol station - Petrol stations seem to take a while to demolish, and this one's no exception. No idea if anything interesting will appear here after the demolition works are done.
The progress of 3+ storey residential developments around Dandenong seems quite healthy to me for now (far healthier than the progress of private central developments!), and there are few developments that will (or do) fit their surrounds poorly. Time will tell how many of the developments will be well executed, but I think things look promising so far.
