Regarding Dandenong

In keeping with last week's post about Vansan Central, this week I'll give a quick round up of all the potential future (and some past) developments along Scott Street.

Chisholm Institute

Chisholm @ 311

As noted earlier, Chisholm has established a presence on the corner of Scott and Lonsdale Streets in the 5 storey building vacated by NAB. I don't believe they inhabit the entire building, but it is clearly a Chisholm-branded building now (with the branding Chisholm @ 311, indicate the building's Lonsdale Street number). They offer a handful (well, a pair) of bachelor degrees from this building, as well as diplomas and certificates, mostly revolving around design and business. A very positive use of the site; I hope they can expand their offerings over the coming years.

Vansan Central

Eight storey, with 39 apartments and restaurant below. I said just about all I needed to say about this site last week.

Heart

I haven't posted information on this development, largely because it seems extremely speculative. Heart is a 12 storey development proposed for the corner of Thomas and Scott Street, neighbouring the church. The developer is Alfasi, who are based in Dandenong South. The eye-catching proposal is for 191 apartments, a supermarket, offices, shops and cafes. It would be an enormous, game-changing (and arguably city-defining) development for Dandenong, but I suspect that it is also extremely tentative.

City Rise

I wrote about City Rise back in October in quite some depth; back when the advertising material from New World Group suggested (but did not confirm) an October start date. There's been no movement since then — sales seem to be stuck at 50%, and until they can sell more apartments, I doubt they can make much more of a move. They did begin a free smart car with every apartment promotion shortly after October, which seemed quite cute. Otherwise, no more news on this one. Really hoping it starts this year.

44-48 Scott Street

According to The Journal and the planning register, a permit has been issued for 80 apartments and a cafe in a "multi-storey" apartment on this site. The previous permit for 46-48 Scott Street indicated 40 apartments over a 5 storey building. There is no further information on how tall the building would be — at least 4 storeys, but one would expect at least an extra level to accommodate the much larger number of apartments. Again, it's not clear how feasible this proposal is; the previous proposal had been sitting on the market for a while.

Rise Apartments

Located further down the street (at 39 Scott Street), Rise Apartments were finished last year with little fuss or even advertising, as far as I could tell. It's a small development of 15 apartments, but nonetheless 5 storeys high and noticeable from Cheltenham Road. This building was a redevelopment of an existing set of two-storey units and, apart from an ugly car park down the bottom that changed little from before, it is a surprisingly attractive development. Dark bronze balconies sound like they wouldn't work on paper, but they look quite nice against the mostly white building.

Just two doors down, 35 Scott Street was sold last year, after being on the market for but a very short time. I wouldn't be surprised if something is proposed for this site too. (Though I expect 3-4 storeys.)


I'd expect many more developments to be proposed along this street in future as there are so many sites that are arguably under-utilised. But the above alone would help to give the street and the city a very different character.
