DANDENONG Library Service is the busiest in Victoria, clocking up more than one million physical and virtual visitors in 2012-13.
And that figure is expected to increase when Dandenong Library moves to its new modern venue next year.
That's quite impressive — and to be clear, the bulk of those visits are physical.
I wonder what impact the continuing advancement of technology will have on libraries as a whole. I think books will always be around in some (physical) form, and so will continue to serve as a library's staple. However, progress has made it clear that books are just one medium for information and libraries have been busy adapting to a changing society, as the article notes. I imagine libraries will increasingly provide the kinds of services to community that commercial concerns struggle with. At least, I think that's what they need to do in order to flourish.
I'm hoping that's what our new library will do.
